June topic - UPDATED: Knowledge Transfer - Sharing What You Know - Knowing What to Share

Knowledge transfer is the process of sharing knowledge, not just information, between one person and another. Much of what we know we carry around with us -- who has time to write it all down? But then, something changes. The reason may be positive -- a promotion or transfer -- and there's time for a smooth transition. Or, the change may be unexpected and negative -- a sudden illness, accident, or worse. But no matter why, once the person is no longer available, we realize too late how much valuable knowledge the person had. 

In this session, you'll learn:

• How to systematically capture what someone knows using outlines, idea mapping, and interviewing; 
• A process for identifying essential job knowledge to share, including methods to transfer knowledge;
• How to become familiar with useful tools for capturing what someone else knows in a friendly, non-threatening way (OneNote; knowledge interviews). 

About the Presenter:

Jerry Winans is the Associate Director of Human Resources, Learning and Development (L&D), at Ball State University, Muncie, Indiana. Jerry is a certified HR professional and a retired U.S. Air Force officer. He has 25+ years of experience in HR/L&D management positions at BellSouth, Honda suppliers, healthcare staffing, and Taylor University. He holds a master's degree in Training and Development/HR, a second master's in Counseling Psychology, and a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communications.
